AI in Marketing in 2027: What Service Businesses Need to Know

Summary: AI in marketing is moving from a handy writing tool to something that shapes how customers find and choose businesses. In 2027, service businesses will feel it most in four places: AI answers replacing some Google clicks, ad platforms building campaigns for you, AI assistants handling enquiries, and websites you can update by asking. Here’s what’s changing and what to do about it.

A couple of years ago, AI in marketing mostly meant asking ChatGPT to write a social post. It was useful, a bit generic, and easy to spot.

That’s not where things are heading. The bigger change is happening behind the scenes, in how Google answers searches, how Meta builds ads and how customers get in touch with businesses. If you run a clinic, a trades business or any other service business, these shifts will affect where your next customers come from.

We’re a lead generation agency, so we spend our days watching where enquiries come from. This is our honest take on how AI is influencing marketing in 2027, and what we’d do about it if it were our business.

1. AI Search Is Changing How Customers Find You

Google now answers a lot of searches itself. AI Overviews sit at the top of many results, and AI Mode lets people have a full conversation with Google instead of clicking through links. Google said at its I/O event in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed a billion monthly users, according to reporting on the announcement.

Add ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and more of your customers are asking an AI tool for a recommendation before they ever see your website. Questions like “Who’s the best aesthetics clinic near me?” or “How much should a new bathroom cost?” now often get a direct answer.

What this means for you

  • Some of the clicks you used to get from Google will drop, especially for simple questions
  • Being named in the AI answer matters as much as ranking on page one
  • Clear, factual pages that answer real questions get quoted more often

What to do about it

Make sure your website answers the questions customers actually ask, in plain English, near the top of each page. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent everywhere online, and keep collecting genuine reviews. This is the heart of AI search optimisation (AEO and GEO), and it builds on good local SEO rather than replacing it.

2. Ad Platforms Are Building Campaigns for You

Meta has been heading towards fully automated advertising for a while. The Wall Street Journal reported that Meta wants advertisers to be able to provide little more than a product image and a budget, and let AI create the ad, choose the audience and suggest the spend, as Marketing Dive covered. Google’s Performance Max works in a similar direction.

For a small business, that sounds brilliant. And some of it is. AI is very good at testing lots of versions of an ad and finding the people most likely to respond.

The catch

AI optimises for whatever you tell it to. If you tell it to get leads, it will find leads, including cheap, low-quality ones that never book. It also doesn’t know your margins, your capacity or that you hate quoting for tiny jobs in the next county.

What to do about it

  • Feed the platforms real results, such as booked appointments, not just form fills
  • Give the AI strong raw material: real photos, clear offers and honest reviews
  • Keep a human eye on where the budget goes and what the leads are actually worth

That’s exactly how we run Facebook and Instagram ads and Google Ads: let the machines do the heavy lifting, but keep the strategy and the quality checks with people who understand your business.

AI can do a lot of the legwork. Deciding what’s worth doing is still a human job.

3. AI Assistants Will Handle More of Your Enquiries

The fastest business to reply usually wins the job. AI makes it much easier to be that business, even when you’re up a ladder or with a patient.

In 2027, more service businesses will use AI assistants to answer common questions, qualify enquiries and offer booking slots, by text, WhatsApp or on their website. Done well, it feels helpful rather than robotic, and it hands over to a real person when it matters.

What to do about it

  • Start simple: an instant reply to every enquiry and a text back for missed calls
  • Write the assistant’s answers in your own voice, and keep them accurate
  • Make sure a human picks up anything complex, sensitive or high value

Our CRM, automation and AI service is built around this. Most clients start with two or three automations and grow from there.

4. Websites You Can Update by Asking

This one is newer. Elementor, the page builder behind many WordPress sites, launched an official MCP connector in September 2026. It lets AI tools such as Claude draft changes to a website from a plain-English request, as this overview explains.

In practice, that means you could ask an AI to add a new service page or update your prices, and it prepares the change as a draft for you to check. It’s early days and it needs care, but it will make keeping a website up to date far less of a chore.

Every website we build is now AI-ready, and during your 12 months of support we review and publish AI-drafted changes for you, so nothing breaks.

What Won’t Change

For all the new tools, the basics of winning customers are the same as ever.

  • People buy from businesses they trust
  • Reviews, real photos and clear prices still do the heavy lifting
  • Fast, friendly follow-up still wins more jobs than clever ads
  • Knowing what a customer is worth to you still decides what you can afford to spend

AI makes good marketing faster and cheaper to run. It doesn’t make a poor offer or a slow reply any better. If anything, it makes the gap between businesses that get the basics right and those that don’t even wider.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI in Marketing

Will AI replace marketing agencies?

AI is replacing a lot of the manual tasks, such as writing first drafts, testing ad variations and reporting. What it can’t do is understand your business, your customers and your numbers, then make the judgement calls. That part still needs people.

Is SEO still worth doing with AI search?

Yes. AI tools rely heavily on well-structured, trusted websites when they put answers together. Good SEO is the foundation for showing up in AI answers too.

Should small businesses use AI to write their marketing?

It’s a great starting point, but always edit it. Add your own experience, real examples and your own way of talking. Generic AI copy is easy to spot, and it rarely persuades anyone.

Where should a service business start with AI?

Start where it saves the most time or wins the most jobs. For most of our clients, that’s instant replies to enquiries and making sure their website answers customers’ questions clearly.
